IMPORTANT INFO
Why Choose Kilimanjaro with World Wide Adventures
When you research African travel providers you will come up with literally thousands of options. They will all tell you what is so amazing about themselves, I mean we have too! They say that nobody submits a bad resume and that’s exactly what a website like this is, a professional business resume. What I can tell you is we are here as one of the Australian based companies offering you an amazing African experience. No matter what you seek to achieve in Tanzania, we can help you achieve it. We can take you to the rooftop of Africa, or if you’re looking for something a little more bespoke, we can assist there too! No matter what you desire in Tanzania or the surrounds, we can help you.
One of the main benefits of choosing us is nothing is hidden. You’ll notice our prices seem way more expensive than many of our offshore competitors, that’s because our treks are priced in AUD and not USD. We’ve factored into your package all the hidden costs some of our competitors don’t tell you about until later! For one, tipping the support staff is mandatory in Tanzania, we provide you guidance on what you’re expected to tip your support staff, so you don’t have to worry about anything when you arrive. So why choose us? – because we created the business we would want to use if we were the client, and we want you to have the most amazing experience and be looking at the mountain and loving this experience, not looking at your wallet and worrying.
Kilimanjaro Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you seem so expensive compared to other companies?
On first glance we are more expensive, and there is a very good reason too! When you look at other companies that facilitate treks in Tanzania, they charge in US Dollars, not in Australian Dollars. When you book with us, you’re paying in AUD, which means you’re protected by Australian Consumer Laws. Many of our competitors are charging you in USD, which means depending on the exchange rate at that time, you could pay even more than you assess on first comparison.
We’ve included every cost you could expect to pay on top of the fee if you chose an offshore provider. While we don’t pay the tips for you, tipping is mandatory on the trails in Tanzania. You should expect to pay $250 – $300 USD (split between all support staff), per trekkers for your adventure. We offer this guidance up front so it prevents you don’t have to work out who to pay and at what rate. While this seems like a lot for tipping, depending on the size of your group, you’re expected to tip the guide, the assistant guide/s, the cooks and the porters who carry the bags for you, it adds up and we aim to take this worry away from you. As guidance, you should look to pay your trek guide $20 – $30 USD per day, any assistant guides $15 – $20 USD per day. You should expect to tip the cooks $10 – $15 USD per day and all of the porters $5 – $10 USD for each day. Please note: USD is preferred as tips over Tanzanian Shilling, but this is also accepted. You should expect to offer these tips during a “tipping ceremony” at the completion of your trek. We ask you offer tips to each person over handing the tips in total to the head guide to ensure fairness to all support staff.
How do I book a trek?
Just head to the ‘Dates’ section on this website and select the adventure you’d like to do. To complete your booking, you will pay a 20% deposit of the full trek price. Please note that your deposit is non-refundable, but it is transferrable to another trek should you have to change trek dates. The balance of your payment will be due eight weeks prior to your trek. The deposit is non-refundable because it pays for the facilitation of your administration and your balance is due so far in advance so that we can pay for the services you require for your trek.
Do you have an age limit?
While we don’t have an ‘age limit’ we have stated on this webpage a minimum age of 14-years. This is because we know the difficulty of the terrain to be undertaken and from our experience know the majority of children younger than 14 will struggle with the accumulation of fatigue they may endure over the consecutive long days of hiking. That said, if you have younger children who you believe are capable, or if you are a little older yourself, please have this discussion with us, we want you to know we’re here to work with you. At World Wide Adventures we state we’re not the ‘gate keepers’ of these experiences and it’s not up to us to tell you if you believe yourself or a child can achieve this experience. Know we’re here to guide you with realistic expectations and allow you to make the best decision for you (or your child)! The main thing we will discuss with you is the fact that you will be on your feet for up to eight to ten hours a day, on consecutive days and at altitude. If you think this is achievable, then we’re here and willing to work with you.
What if I change my mind and can no longer trek?
You will see the full refund policy on this page. This details your options should you change your mind or can no longer trek.
How fit do I need to be?
Although a standard level of fitness is advised, you don’t need to be a super athlete. If you’re a generally active person, you’ll do great! If you’re still concerned about your fitness, reach out and talk to us about how we can assist you with the best ways you can prepare for this adventure. We have the knowledge and experience to best guide you in your preparation.
Do you organise travel for us?
Whilst we don’t facilitate your travel to and from Tanzania, we work closely with an agent that knows what you will need. They’re able to book your flights and organise your travel insurance for you. They then send copies of this information to us, so this is one less thing you have to do.
How many people will be on my trek?
This varies, but you could expect to have not more than 10 people on our group treks. We find this number is intimate enough that you don’t get lost, but big enough that you can find your own space when you want this too.
What is the accommodation like?
In Moshi, you will be in a 4-star hotel (twin share) and on the trail you will be camping in a tent (also twin share).
What if I don’t want twin share accommodation?
You’re able to purchase a single supplement at the time of booking.
What and where will I eat on the trail?
Our team take a kitchen tent which is erected for you every day. This is complete with tables and chairs for your comfort. You will have a range of meal choices to suit all diets, allergies and or intolerances.
If you have an allergy, intolerance or preference, your medical questionnaire will detail this and we will work with you so the trekking and kitchen staff know what they can prepare for your meals.
What about drinking water?
At camp well is water provided that has been boiled and sterilised for drinking. You are encouraged to take cordial or flavour altering drops as the steri solution can leave a slight taste. You will always have ample drinking water
What is the toilet situation?
Toilets are camp toilets – these are carried up the mountain by the porters and are cleaned and sterilised each morning.
Where can I wash?
Every morning and most nights the staff will place a bowl of warm water outside your tent for you to have a ‘bird bath’. Outside of this it is wet wipes as there are no showers along the way.
I am unsure how I will handle walking at altitude, do you have anything to assist me?
We carry a Pulse Oximeter – Readings are taken every night before going to bed. In addition to this we have emergency oxygen which is carried by our Guides
What administration do I need to complete to be ready to travel?
When you book, we send you a letter which details the initial things we need you to do. When this is returned to us, we send you a full set of instructions including dates of flights, pre-travel covid vaccine proof requirements, visa applications, transportation in Tanzania, your hotel and what equipment you need to bring with you.
As a part of this is a risk waiver and a medical questionnaire that needs to be facilitated by a physician. We need a copy of your travel insurance and you’re all set.
This may sound like a lot, but it’s easy and we help you along the way!
Why do I need travel insurance to travel with you?
It is a mandatory requirement that all participants on one of our adventures have travel insurance. Travel insurance not only protects you from theft and cancelled flights, but it means that if you become ill or are injured, we can evacuate you to the nearest suitable medical facility, where they pay for your treatment. Furthermore, in extreme cases, your travel insurer will pay for your return to Australia. It is for this reason why travel insurance in mandatory. Note: For the best protection of your adventure, we recommend you obtain your travel insurance as soon as you book your trek with us, if not beforehand. In the event something happens, your insurance protects your booking
I don’t want to trek with a group, I want to trek alone, can you help?
Yes, we can! Whilst the cost to do this will be more than a group rate, we can facilitate your travel should you want to go by yourself with a guide. If this is what you want, get in touch, we’re here to assist you.
Do I need to be vaccinated?
At World Wide Adventures we hold no feeling towards your vaccination status, but the Tanzanian Government may. Should you not be vaccinated, and Tanzanian legislation states you need to be, this is between you and them and remains your risk.
